Consultation that grows out of research

The methods behind every service

01 · Prevailing Value System

DEVELOPED BY DR. HANAA MOOSA · PHD 2014 · PUBLISHED 2018

Beyond the familiar political, economic, social, cultural and urban contexts lies a more comprehensive one: the value system that prevails in a community. It continually changes all other contexts and sets their direction of change. Adaptive reuse must read it first, to balance the community's real needs with conservation.

  • Wide context — read the value system and its direction; choose active or passive reuse and the reuse category
  • Limited context — compare and select suitable uses within that category
  • Technical studies — set the constants to conserve and the variables that serve contemporary life

Moosa, H. (2018). Prevailing Value System Based Context, Adaptive Reuse. Proceedings of Science and Technology, IEREK.

02 · Adaptive reuse levels

DEVELOPED BY DR. HANAA MOOSA WITH PROF. AHMED OUF · 2019

Reuse decided at three scales at once, so that a single building's new use supports the street and the district around it.

  • District — leading districts, residential and cemetery zones
  • Street — craft and market streets, routes and community centres
  • Building — typologies matched to suitable new uses

Moosa, H., & Ouf, A. (2019). Adaptive Reuse Levels in Historic Cairo. ArchCairo.

03 · Economic Blind Spots framework

DEVELOPED BY DR. HANAA MOOSA · 2025

Reuse frameworks weigh political, social, cultural, architectural and environmental factors but leave the detailed economy out. This framework adds it — turning reuse from passive conservation into a tool for urban development.

  • Opportunity costs of each reuse choice
  • Economic networks and chains around the building
  • Alignment with the region's leading industries and sectors

Moosa, H. (2025). Overcoming Economic Blind Spots in Adaptive Reuse. International Design Journal 15(6).

04 · Institutional–Community Bridging Framework

DEVELOPED BY DR. HANAA MOOSA · INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR DOCUMENTARY HERITAGE (ICDH), UNDER THE AUSPICES OF UNESCO · 2025

A transferable method for closing the gap between heritage institutions and the communities they serve, developed through commissioned research on documentary heritage in the Arab world.

  • Six stages, from mapping institutions and their value systems to evaluation
  • Entertainment-Led Community Documentation Model
  • A new mediating role: the heritage knowledge broker

Moosa, H. (2025). Documentation as a Process and Cultural Practice toward Heritage. International Centre for Documentary Heritage (ICDH), under the auspices of UNESCO; published with ISBN.
